Being a bright spark

About Me

Being a bright spark

Being an electrician is a fun job. I get to see all sorts of offices and homes. A lot of the time, the jobs I need to do are relatively small, but it's great that people call me because the risks of someone who doesn't know what they are doing getting hurt on electrical work is huge. I never look at a job and think why did these people call me? If you are a bright spark and don't like to meddle in electrical work you don't fully understand, then keep reading my site. I'm passionate about safe electrical work.

What to Consider Before Buying and Using a Power Generator

Power generators allow you to have access to electricity in your home even when the power goes out. This is ideal if your entire street has no power but you need lights or want to charge your electrical appliances. If this will be your first time purchasing one, consider these tips.

Know What Type of Generator to Get First

The first thing you need to do is consider your options when it comes to power generators so you can narrow down your results and decide what type of generator to get. This includes figuring out what size you need based on the room or area you need the generator for. You might have a small apartment or a large house, so that can make a big difference. Some other things to consider when trying to choose the right generator include whether you want it to run on diesel or gasoline and what special features you want, such as a timer feature or how much power it has.

Think About the Power of the Generator

The next decision to make is what type of power you want in your generator. If you know that you want your entire house to have access to lights and electrical appliances, then you need to have a generator with considerably more power. This will be a larger generator and cost more since it has more watts of power for you. On the other hand, if you are okay with just limited electricity during a power outage, you can get by with a lower amount of power. An electrician can help you decide what generator will give you the power you need.

Learn How to Use It Properly

You need to know how to use the generator properly, including where to store it, how to use it, and how to recognise potential electrical hazards. First of all, a generator should never be stored inside your home or in an attached building, so keep it out of the garage and basement. It needs to be kept outdoors but in a safe environment that is free from the elements. Typically, a storage shed is a good option for the generator. This keeps you free from carbon monoxide poisoning but keeps it protected from rain and snow.

Also make sure you are using an extension cord meant for outdoor use. With all cords you use with the generator, they should not be worn or have any breaks or tears in them. If you see the wire inside the plastic coating, do not use that cord. If you notice any electrical issues when turning on the generator, such as flickering lights, turn off the generator and call an electrician for help.
